The community of Spirit Lake, Idaho is located amidst the beautiful Coeur d'Alene lakes in northern Kootenai County. Once home to a host of thriving timber businesses, it is now identified as a bedroom community for the Spokane, Post Falls and Coeur d'Alene area. Founded in 1906 by William Blackwell as a site for a major log mill, it flourished into one of the largest pine box manufacturing plants and was a major source of white pine for the Diamond Match Company.

Blackwell not only invisioned a state-of-the-art sawmill, but a city to thrive along with it. To accomplish this, Spirit Lake Land Company was founded and the entire city of Spirit Lake was born. Lots, acreage and commercial sites were subdivided and advertised for sale. The real estate boom was on.

Recreation and summerhomes sprang up overnight on the picturesque waterfront of Spirit Lake.

The mill ceased operation in 1940, but Spirit Lake maintains much of the same character it once had. Affordable land surrounds the Spirit Lake area with lakefront homes and lots still among the most affordable in the county.
