Brewing beer fits this bill perfectly because it does not require any huge investment in time or capital. Brewing is also a great hobby to enjoy with your friends.

Equipment You will Need

Home brewing does not need you to have a large set of expensive and fancy equipment to brew your first beer. Most brewing supply stores do sell starter kits for less than 80 dollars. If you want this to be a long term hobby, you can buy a better brewing kit for less than 150 dollars. There are a number of online stores that will even ship the ingredients and equipment directly to your door. It may cost even less if you decide to borrow all or some of the equipment from a close friend. Below is a summary of what is needed.

  • A Large Pot - The pot should be at least 3 gallons in size. A larger pot will generally result in fewer spills.
  • Clamp and Tubing - You can buy clamps from your closest brew store. These are used in the siphoning and bottling of the beer.
  • Airtight Fermenting Bucket - You will need a 4 - 5 gallons plastic bucket with a tight lid. If your budget can afford it, it's advisable that you buy a glass carboy because they don't leak and they are easier to keep sanitized and don't leak. If you get a glass carboy you may need a larger bottle brush to clean it well.
  • A Stopper and an Airlock - These should be sized to fit your fermenter.
  • Bottle Filler - This can be purchased from your nearest homebrew equipments supplier. It should be sized to fit properly on the end of your siphon tubing.
  • Thermometer - Purchase a floating thermometer with a range of 32-220 F or 0-100 C.
  • Bottles - You will need just over two cases of 12 oz bottles to accommodate 5 gallons of beer. Use high quality bottles that require an opener rather than twist-off bottles.
  • A Bottle Brush - While not very important, you will need a small bottle brush to get all of your bottles clean
  • Bottle Capper - This is a hand driven device used to cap bottles. You can buy the capper from your nearest homebrew store.
  • A Sanitizing solution - Beer is highly prone to infections, so everything you use must be well sanitized before using it. You can use household bleach, but the household breach must be well rinsed to prevent any kind of contamination.

Ingredients You Will Need.

6 pounds of Unhopped Pale Malt Extract - This comes in cans that are around 3-4 pounds each. Malt extract provides the sweet base for the yeast to feed on to make alcohol.
